The bicycle chain is responsible for the transmission of torque from the bottom bracket to the wheel hub of the rear wheel. It is made of steel and is composed of individual members which fit exactly on the front and rear chain ring. Therefore there are different chains, depending on the number of gears. It is also important that the length is matched to the bike so that the wheel chain does not sit too tight, or too loose.
Especially in the case of bikes with a derailleur gear, a chain can wear with time. In particular, it should be replaced if it has become too wide and as a result, may damage sprockets and chain-rings. To find out whether this is the case, you can measure it with a chain gauge. You will also find this among the bike accessories.
Chains are available with different levels of quality, most noticeably in terms of durability and weight. Master links or chain pins are required for assembly. These normally accompany new chains, however we also have them available separately.
