The GC50s stir up a lot of dust: With the carbon wheels of the BACKROAD FF, ROSE provides the right answer to ever faster, ever more professional gravel races – and the question of how gravel and aero can be combined. 'Aero in the front, lightweight at the rear' is the motto in a nutshell. In other words: The GC50s come with two completely different rim profiles. Maximum aerodynamics at the front, completely trimmed for lightweight construction at the rear. And there are good reasons for this.

With wide gravel tyres, conventional aero wheels have a hard time as the narrow rim is in the slipstream of the tyre and can only have a limited aerodynamic effect. The rim profile of the GC50 front wheel is therefore optimised for 40 mm tyres and has also been increased to a width of 40 mm. The result is an almost seamless transition that allows the 50 mm high-profile rim to fully develop its strengths. Tests in the virtual wind tunnel confirm this across all relevant angles of attack – including the sailing effect.

As the rear wheel is not directly in the wind and the air hitting it is already very turbulent, weight optimisation was the focus of development. The rim profile is therefore narrower and differently shaped, but with a height of 50 mm, just like the front wheel, it offers an ideal compromise between aerodynamics, crosswind stability and lightweight construction. The inner rim width of 27 mm is also identical – wide gravel tyres thus have better support, more contact area and can be ridden with less air pressure, especially in tubeless mode. This means more comfort and grip, even on fast gravel curves. Those who want to follow the tubeless trend will also be pleased with the moulded contact surfaces on the valve hole, which make it easier to tighten the valve nuts.

Maximum speed was also a must for the hubs, which were developed in collaboration with the specialists from Newmen. The diameter of the hub bodies has been reduced for this purpose, resulting in an even better air flow and weight savings. The 24 Sapim bladed spokes with internal spoke nipples have the same effect and also contribute to the stability and aerodynamics of the wheel. In addition, new plain bearings and seals reduce frictional resistance, making the GC50s even faster. With an enlarged hub flange on the rear wheel, even the higher torques resulting from the use of MTB cassettes have been taken into account.
