How to get your Di2 bike ready to ride (2x12)

Electronic Shimano Di2 gears must be connected to the battery and charged during initial assembly. Find out how it works for Shimano Di2 2x12-speed shifting systems here.

You need

  • Di2 plug tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Di2 power supply

Note

This tutorial describes the connection and charging process for Di2 systems with wireless shifters and a wired rear derailleur or front derailleur (Semi Wireless). For other shifting systems, go to the overview and select the right model.

Step 1: Connecting the battery

  • The battery is located in the seat post for Di2 2x12-speed gears and must be connected with the cables in the seat tube.
  • To do this, attach the Di2 tool to the plug head and insert it into the holder in matching colour on the Di2 battery. Then remove the Di2 tool.
  • Repeat this process with the second plug.

Step 2: Fitting the seat post

  • Slide the seat post into the seat tube. Make sure that the zip tie is not pinched in the process.
  • Position the seat post at the correct seat height and secure it using the clamp screw.
  • Finally, tighten the screw to the required torque using the torque wrench.

Step 3: Charging the battery

  • Remove the protective cap from the charging port at the rear derailleur.
  • Connect the charging cable to the charging port and plug the mains plug into a socket.
  • The charging process starts and is indicated by coloured LEDs on the power supply and the rear derailleur.
  • Allow the battery to charge fully and do not forget to place the protective plug on the charging port after disconnecting the mains adapter.

Tips

  • If your rear derailleur doesn't respond to shifting commands even though the battery is charged, the round cell battery in your shifter may be empty.
  • In order to check this, press both Di2 buttons on the shift/brake lever at the same time for about 1 second. The indicator LED should now shine green (11–100%) or red (1–10%). Otherwise, the round cell battery must be replaced.
  • To do this, fold the lever hood down from top to bottom. Open the battery compartment on the side using a cross-head screwdriver and replace the round cell battery with a new one. The process is also explained in detail in this video from Shimano (YouTube).
